Wrestling tourney has strong BR flavor

Normally, the number 13 is considered unlucky and fuels all kinds of
superstitions.
Don’t tell that to the 13 local-area wrestlers who enter this weekend’s State
Farm/Louisiana High School Athletic Association State Wrestling Tournament as
top seeds in their respective divisions.
Two local wrestlers from Catholic High are top seeds in Division I-Class 5A.
Four wrestlers from three different local schools are among the No. 1 seeds in
Division II-Class 4A. In Division III-Classes 3A and below, seven wrestlers from
two schools are top seeds.
The two-day tournament begins 9 a.m. Friday at Kenner’s Pontchartrain Center.
Saturday’s action includes a morning session at 9 a.m. The finals in all three
divisions are set for 6:30 p.m. Saturday.
Two-time defending Division III state champion Brusly is the local school with
the most top seeds. Five Panthers are seeded first in their respective weight
classes — Blake Panepinto (35-16) in the 103-pound weight class, Nick Hebert
(43-6) at 140, Jake Leveron (31-6) at 171, Myron Harris (34-3) at 189 and Andrew
Baldwin (27-12) at 215.
Parkview Baptist and Tara have the local wrestlers with the best overall
records. David Roper (39-2) is seeded first in the 152-pound weight class in
Division III. The Eagles’ Chris Nowosiwsky (24-10) is the top seed at 119.
Tara’s Blake Dowden is 15-1 and seeded No. 1 in the 125-pound class in Division
II.
Zachary and Catholic each have two top seeds in their respective divisions.
Jeff Falcon (46-5) at 119 and Brian Parenton (51-6) at 145 are the top seeds for
Catholic going into the Division I competition. Jesse Graves (25-14) at 112 and
Cade Felps (30-10) at 119 are Zachary’s top seeds in Division.
East Ascension’s Michael Wascom (10-10) is the area’s other No. 1 seed. Wascom
will compete in the 152 class in Division II.
