The idea to bring together three of the top Division II wrestling programs in early January to again a picture of the state tournament in mid-February worked.

The visiting powerhouse from Chalmette, Holy Cross, won both of its dual competitions with wins of 59-15 over Northside and 46-30 over Teurlings.

But that left little regret in the mind of Teurlings coach Kent Masson.  "I think we all accomplished the main reason for making the trip," Masson said. "Both (TC and Holy Cross) wanted to see what they needed to do to get a higher seed.

"Holy Cross has a phenomenal team. We knew that if we could beat them or come close to beating them that we would have a chance to win another state championship or at least come real close."

The Rebels were leading until Holy Cross claimed three straight pins to close out the match in the three heaviest weight divisions. In fact, there were pins in 10 of the 14 matches.

"I think there were two reasons why there were so many pins," Masson said. "I don't think either team is in their best physical shape. You could see it in the third round where both teams were dragging along, not in top condition.  "The second reason is that some wrestlers put themselves in position to be pinned. The wrestlers who didn't get pinned were constantly moving."

Masson said his Rebels were without two starters. The Rebels' coach also said that Northside's squad is better than the scores indicated due to five forfeits right off the bat in the smaller weight divisions.
