Before the drama of the second-round matchup between 11-time defending champion Comeaux High and top contender Teurlings Catholic, there's going to be all eyes on the 2:30 p.m. weigh-in today an hour before the action begins in the 2013 Acadiana SportsCare Lafayette Parish Dual Championships at Carencro High.

"Yes, the weigh-in could be very interesting," Teurlings coach Kent Masson said.

The primary cause for concern is the wrestlers being off from school Thursday due to the heavy rain in the Acadiana area this week.  "It's possible that some coaches may hold some kids out," Masson said. "We'll see."

Once the wrestling begins, it won't take very long for this year's tournament to cut to the chase. The Comeaux Spartans and the Teurlings Catholic Rebels are the two overwhelming favorites to win the round-robin team event this weekend.

After Comeaux meets Acadiana and Teurlings tackles Northside in the first round, the Spartans and Rebels will be squaring off in round two, which will start approximately 5:30 p.m.

"Some of the classes they're stronger in, we're not as strong and then there are classes where we're stronger and they're not as strong in," Masson said. "It may all just even out."

If it does work out that way, the final outcome could come down to the results of three promising showdowns.

For starters, there's the blockbuster confrontation between the top wrestler of each program in Tyrek Malveaux and Travis Thibodeaux at 152. It'll be the third meeting of the year between the two with Malveaux winning the first two.

Then at 120, Comeaux's defending state champion Jacob Dale will meet promising Rebels prospect Tristan Lee.

The third one is at 220 where Teurlings Catholic's Adam Garza squares off with Comeaux's Matthew Tillman.

"The key for us is going to be able to win a couple of the matches that we're not exactly sure that we can win," Masson said.

While none of the other programs are expected to make a strong run at the overall team title, each team has their fair share of contenders to win top individual awards.

At Acadiana High, there's Jude Angelle at 132, Ben Rogers at 138, Gage Duhon at 170 and Eric Duhon at 182.

At Carencro High, there's Dylan Richard at 106, Justice Hebert at 138, Dillon Breaux at 152 and the heavyweight tandem of Blake Villard and Greg Peltier.

St. Thomas More may not have the overall numbers that some programs sport, but three legitimate contenders in Andre Walther at 132, Bryant Montero at 145 and David Quiring at 195.  Montero has already won first-place honors at Rummel and Dutchtown this season at 152, but is dropped to 145 for the rest of the season. He was sixth at state last season, but hopes to make a legitimate run at a state title this season.
