BATON ROUGE — With the local Livingston Parish high school wrestlers starting off the season against some tough competition at the Warriors Open last Saturday at St. Michael’s High, two managed to come away with first-place individual titles, while another captured a third.

Live Oak’s Cody Hill won all four of his matches on his way to winning the 126-pound weight class.

Heading into the finals, Hill had beaten his previous three match-competitors by a combined score of 26-1.

Hill found himself down to Brennan Taylor of Catholic High 3-2 after two periods in the championship match, but rallied to dominate the third period for a 12-6 decision win.

Denham Springs’ Chris Marson took first place in the 106-pound weight class.

Marson also went 4-0 in his matches, including a hard-fought 7-6 win over East Ascension’s Alex Bitteridge in the semifinals.

In the finals, Marson easily defeated Brody Martin of Jesuit by a 9-3 decision.

The only other parish wrestler to place was Live Oak’s Jacob Chenevert, who took third place, in the 113-pound weight class.

Chenevert went 2-1 on the day, defeating two opponents quickly in the first period, while suffering his only loss of the day when he was re-rolled, risking a throw and eventually was pinned.

“Considering it being so early in the year, there was a lot of great wrestling,” said LOHS head coach Chris Collier. “Many of (Saturday’s) matches will have implications in February at the state tournament seeding meeting.”

Other wrestlers winning multiple matches on the day included Live Oak’s Brody Bonura (195 lbs.) and Eagles teammate Josh Morphet (145 lbs.).

Both teams will be competing next weekend at the Wildcat Invitational at Central High School.
