Live Oak finishes 2nd at huge wrestling meet

BATON ROUGE – The Live Oak High School wrestling team finished a strong second at the highly-competitive Baton Rouge High School Tournament last weekend.

Coach Chris Collier’s Eagles racked up 188 points, highlighted by an individual win by Cody Hill in the 126-pound division.

Catholic High won the 20-team meet with 268 points, while East Ascension finished third with 141 and Dutchtown fourth with 127.

Denham Springs and Walker also competed and finished in 11th and 17th place respectively.

Rounding out the team finishes were Zachary (97), St. Amant (85), St. Michael (65), McKinley (60), Baton Rouge High (59), Central (41), Denham Springs (31), Redemptorist (31), Episcopal (29), Centerville Academy (28), Woodlawn (24), Istrouma (18), Walker (15), Tara (15), Parkview Baptist (8.5), Dunham (8) and Baker (3).

Hill defeated Catholic’s Brennan Taylor to win the 126-pound class, with East Ascension’s Brian Kimball taking third and St. Amant’s Tristyn Wheeler fourth.

Denham Springs’ Christopher Marson was the only other parish participant who took home an individual title, as he defeated Live Oak’s Colt Olinde to win the 103-pound weight class. Dutchtown’s Ryan Reames defeated Zachary’s Jaylon Lindon for third place.

Live Oak’s Jacob Chenevert was runner-up in the 113-pound division, losing to East Ascension’s Jake Bernard for the title. BRHS’ Eric Davis finished third and Catholic’s Dominic Dewey fourth.

In the 120-pound class, Catholic’s Phillip Nauta defeated EA’s Matt Ashford for the title, while Woodlawn’s Lacklan Kristonis beat Live Oak’s Brennan Webb for third place.

Eagles’ Dean Roberts took third in the 132-pound division with a win over Tara’s James Gay. Catholic’s Matthew Mire won the class title with a win over St. Michael’s Michael Ensminger.

Live Oak’s Seth Bosarge finished fourth in the 138-pound class, losing to Dutchtown’s Kevin Chester in the consolation match. Catholic’s James Claitor defeated EA’s Mike Bernard for the title.

In the 145-pound division, the winner was Redemptorist’s Grant Godso, with Catholic’s Reid Burns runner-up, while Nick Maxey of Zachary and Dutchtown’s Brandon Cowell tied for third.

At 153 pounds, Catholics’ Kevin Moran won the title, with St. Amant’s Leroy Johnson runner-up, followed by EA’s Dequan Jackson and BRHS’ Nijahi Butler.

Live Oak’s Brandon Chevevert was runner-up in the 160-pound division, losing to Catholic’s Brandon Luckett. St. Michael’s Michael Youngblood finished third, with Dutchtown’s Mason Schexnaydre taking fourth.

Eagles’ Chris Trahan finished fourth in the 170-pound class, which Dillon Breaux of Catholic won, with Dutchtown’s Tra’von Jackson runner-up and Zachary’s Jared Durr with third place.

In the 182-pound weight class, St. Michael’s Donnie Berg took the title, with Istrouma’s Isaiah English runner-up, followed by Tyler Ventress of McKinley and Live Oak’s Brody Bonura in the fourth place.

Catholic’s Caleb Sutton won the 195-pound division, defeating Dutchtown’s Javan Ben for the title. St. Amant’s Dylan Stephens took third, while McKinley’s Kalus Ladmirault was fourth.

At 220 pounds, it was Dutchtown’s Brandon Thongsavanh coming out on top with a win over Zachary’s Chris Wright, while Catholic’s Myles Nash finished third and Live Oak’s Blake Brock was in fourth place.

And in the Heavyweight Division (285 pounds), it was Centerville’s Brian Arnett defeating East Ascesnion’s Connor Karwath for the title, with Central’s Wesley Lee taking third place and Episcopal’s Taylor McKay fourth.
