Hill leads Live Oak to 3rd place finish in city meet

BATON ROUGE – Highlighted by Cody Hill winning the 128-pound weight class, along with being named the “Outstanding Wrestler” among the lower weight classifications, Live Oak finished a highly respectable third place at the Baton Rouge City Wrestling Meet last Saturday at Catholic High School

The host Bears were the runaway champions with 327 points, while Brusly edged out the Eagles for second place with 200 points to Live Oak’s 196.

Dutchtown finished fourth among the 24 teams competing with 186, followed by Zachary with 128.5 and St. Michael’s at 118.5.

Other parish teams involved were Denham Springs, which finished 18th (13 points), Walker 20th (10) and French Settlement 21st (7).

Hill, the defending city champion, posted an 11-4 decision over rival Brennan Taylor of Catholic. It was the eighth meeting between the two this season, with Hill now owning a 5-3 edge on the mat.

Three other Live Oak wrestlers made it to the championship match in their respective weight classes, but had to settle for the runner-up spot.

In the 108-pound division, Live Oak’s Colt Olinde was pinned by East Ascension’s Alex Bettenidge at the 2:55 mark.

Eagles’ Seth Bosarge lost a 9-0 decision to Catholic’s James Claitor in the 140-pound class, while Live Oak teammate Blake Brock lost a much closer 4-2 decision to Catholic’s Caleb Sutton in the sixth round of an overtime match.

In the consolation bracket, Live Oak’s Jacob Chenevert posted a 3-2 decision over Woodlawn’s Lacklan Kritsonis in the 115-pound division, while Brandon Chenevert defeated EA’s Dequan Jackson 4-2 in the 154-pound class.

Eagle Brody Bonura pinned Brusly’s Dillon Prejean at 3:39 in the 172-pound division.

Two other Live Oak wrestlers met defeat in the consolations, as Dean Roberts lost a 2-1 decision to EA’s Matthew Ashford in the 122-pound class, while Eagle Nick Simoneaux was pinned by Dutchtown’s Alexis Medine at 2:32 in the 184-pound division.
