Conditioning carries Holy Cross in tri-meet

Coaches emphasize the importance of conditioning in wrestling over and over again. But it proved to be the deciding factor as Holy Cross beat Riverdale, 75-6, and Belle Chasse, 67-6, in a three-way meet Wednesday. Belle Chasse was able to pull of a 62-48 win against Riverdale.

The Tigers were able to win every match that reached the third period.

“We just let our condition take care of itself,” said Holy Cross coach Eric Desormeaux. “We knew if we got a match into the third round, we’re either coming out with a win or a pin.”

Michael Yeatman, the All-New Orleans area top-ranked wrestler in the 220-pound class, led the way for Holy Cross with two pins in two matches, against Robert Kennedy of Belle Chasse, ranked fourth, and Cody Stutson of Riverdale. In the 195-pound class, Daniel Relayson scored a pin over Riverdale’s Trey Jones (1:55) and a 3-1 decision over Logan Thompson of Belle Chasse.

Jordan Mastrianni of Belle Chasse may have pushed his way into the All-New Orleans area top five of the 138-pound class with a 2-1 decision over George Benoit in a tightly contested battle. During the contest, Benoit sustained a cut on the bridge of his nose and the match was halted twice for an injury timeout. Mastrianni sensed a slight opening despite a vigorous effort from Benoit and capitalized.

“That was the hardest match I’ve wrestled this year,” said Mastrianni. “Benoit is a phenomenal wrestler, great at top. I couldn’t shoot in because he was way faster than me, so I just played to my defenses.”

There was a lesson learned by Benoit and he’ll use it to his advantage the next time on the mat.

“You’re going to have those tough guys and tough matches,” said Benoit. “I’ve got to get in the room, and take anything and everything that happened in that match and learn from it. The next time, I will definitely come out much better prepared. I can’t wrestle for 5:55. I have to go for a full six minutes.”

There is a possibility that Mastrianni and Benoit could meet again this weekend at the Rummel-Sam Serra Invitational which starts Friday and concludes on Saturday. It will be a test for both if the rematch, indeed, does occur.

“If George is going to compete at that level at the state meet, that’s a kid he’s going to have to go through,” said Desormeaux. “I told him he’d have to ramp it up and go harder to try and break him. “Mastrianni is a great kid. We tell our boys all the time to not put yourselves in position to let an official make a call on a match.”
