Although the state tournament won’t take place until February at the Pontchartrain Center, many coaches point toward the Louisiana Classic tournament at the Exerfit Center in Baton Rouge as the best barometer of a true state champion.

The tournament, scheduled for Jan. 18-19, features open competition in each of the 14 weight classes among competitors from Division I-III in addition to teams from out of state, like perenial power Hoover (Ala.).

All-New Orleans area wresters winning titles included Brother Martin’s Paul Klein (106), Gerard Roman (195), Connor Campo (126) and Chris Arms (170) of St. Paul’s; Holy Cross’ Nick Michael (152), Scott Gibbons of Rummel (182), and John Ehret’s Dortania McIntyre (220).

In the team standings, Brother Martin scored 204.5 points to finish second, behind champion Catholic-B.R. (212.5). Other area teams with strong finishes were third-place Rummel (172) and fifth-place Jesuit (156.5).

Brother Martin has been on a roll and figures to be the team to beat, with many individual area wrestlers expected to be favored in their respective weight classes.

HOLY CROSS PLACES IN LAS VEGAS: No sooner than they finished class last week, the Tigers were off to the state of Nevada for the Las Vegas Holiday Classic. With an even larger field this year, Holy Cross once again recorded a top 20 finish.

Led by a third-place finish by Porter Dazet in the 182-pound class, the Tigers were 17th among the field of 84 teams. Danile Relayson was fifth in the 195-pound class while Michael Yeatman came in eighth in the 220-pound class.

“Bodies are sore, but the experience they received wrestling on that large of a stage was priceless,” Holy Cross coach Eric Desormeaux said. “We can’t wait to get back to local completion.”

That will happen on January 4 when the Tigers travel to Lafayette for a tri-meet, hosted by 2012 Division II state champion Teurlings Catholic.

REFEREES NEEDED: The Greater New Orleans Wrestling Officials Association (GNOWOA) is looking for new members. Candidates should have some wrestling background or experience as well as a strong desire to uphold and maintain the strong traditions of the wrestling community while earning money. Interested individuals should contact President Jerry Schmidt at (504) 813-9372 or email Gerald.Schmidt@spr.doe.gov.
