Led by returning Division l state champion Paul Klein and Austin Meyne, Brother Martin placed first in six matches to lead all teams in the Mandeville Open.

Klein and Meyne dominated the competition in the 120-pound and 126-pound weight ranges.

“I was really impressed with (Klein and Meyne),” Brother Martin Coach Rob Dauterive said. “It’s the first tournament of the year, so there’s still work to be done.”

Klein won the third championship match in the 120-pound weight class over Holy Cross’ Alex Nicosia, the returning Division II State champion.  “I knew I had to be ready going in to today,” Klein said. “There was a lot of tough competition, especially in the finals against (Nicosia). I knew if I brought my A-game and would be able to outlast him through three periods, then I knew I would win.”

Meyne took down the opposition in the fourth championship match in the 126-pound weight class.

Jesuit was not far behind Brother Martin in first-place finishes. The Blue Jays were second in the tournament and placed four of its players in the winner’s circle.

Jesuit’s Nick Charles started the championship game round off with a win over Rummel’s Devyn Breaud. Charles said he was expecting a tough match from the beginning.

“I knew he was going to bring it in the first period,” he said. “After that, I knew it was going to be who wanted it more. I knew he was going to be quick on his feet, especially in the first period. I figured he would throw a lot of shot like singles and doubles. If I could get past the first period without getting taken down, I knew it would be easier from there.”

Senior Mitch Capella, the Division I finals runner-up last year, pinned the competition in the 113-pound weight class and took the second championship match in short order.

“Our team is still a work in progress,” Jesuit Coach Spencer Harris said. “We have a lot of young guys out there, so we’re just going to continue to try and get better. We’re in a little bit of a rebuilding mode, but you hope you can take away some of the experiences of last year and build on that.”

Senior Connor Campo of St. Paul’s, the returning state champion in Division I, won the 138-pound weight division and Rummel’s Tyler Frame, a fourth-place state finisher, won the 145-pound weight division.

“I was really disappointed in my team’s lack of conditioning,” Dauterive said. “We lost a couple of close matches that we should have won. Hopefully this was a learning experience for my team, and we’ll continue to improve as the year goes on.”
