De la Salle's Alex Martin among winners at Griffin Open wrestling tournament at Dutchtown High

Geismar -- Wrestlers from the New Orleans area took home three championships at the Griffin Open at Dutchtown High School in Geismer on Saturday evening.

 

Garnering spots as the No. 1 seeds were defending Division III state champion Alex Martin of De la Salle and last year’s Division III state runner-up from Thomas Jefferson, Brent Matherne. Both earned major decisions in the finals over the No. 2 seeds in their weight classes: Martin, 13-2 over Rayne’s Austin Bohne at 160 pounds, and Matherne, 13-1 over Live Oak’s Seth Bosarge at 138.

 

Joining Martin and Matherne was Ehret’s Jack Fontenot at 152 pounds. Fontenot, seeded fifth, won his semifinals match in overtime, and then defeated third-seeded Bryant Montero of St. Thomas More 5-3 for the championship.

 

Helen Cox 132-pound wrestler and No. 1 seed Jorge Sanchez was upset in the finals when he was pinned by Brusly’s Trevor Scherman, a returning Division III state champion, Sanchez’ first loss of the season. Unseeded Blaze d’Aquin of Ehret made it to the finals at 170 pounds but was defeated 14-4 by defending Division II state champion Louis Stutes of St. Louis in Lake Charles.

 

Two returning state champions were defeated during the tournament. Redemptorist’s top seed at 145 pounds, Grant Godso, lost 5-4 in overtime in the semifinals to No. 4 Michael Bernard of East Ascension, who later lost 6-4 in the finals to No. 2 seed Brandon Cowell, Dutchtown’s only champion. Godso, a defending Division III state champion, finished third.

 

The most anticipated match of the evening was at 126 pounds between defending Division I state champion Jacob Dale of Comeaux and defending Division II state champion Cody Hill of Live Oak. Hill scored a takedown in the first period and each wrestler could only score an escape point afterward, resulting in a 3-1 decision for Hill.

 

Others winners included the following: No. 1 seed Christopher Marson of Denham Springs, who defeated No. 3 seed Colt Olinde of Live Oak at 106 pounds; No. 1 seed Hunter Taylor of Lafeyette with a 9-1 major decision over No. 3 Jake Bernard of East Ascension; No. 1 Baret Sanchez of Brusly who pinned unseeded Kamryn Pipes of Catholic in 3:34; No. 1 seed Michael Daiy of Lafayette who pinned unseeded Chris Wright of Zachary in 1:25; No. 1 seed Brody Bonura of Live Oak who decisioned No. 2 seed Alex Norris of Comeaux 10-4; No. 1 seed Quin Gilliam of Byrd over unseeded Andrew Mayer of St. Louis 5-1.

 

Live Oak won the team championship handily, scoring 152 points in the 30-team field. Comeaux was second with 109 points and Ducthtown squeaked past Lafayette 110.5 points to 100 for fourth and fifth places. East Ascension with 91, Brusly with 85.5, Zachary with 83.5, St. Louis with 82, Catholic with 76.5 and John Ehret with 57 points rounded out the top ten placing schools.
