The hard part is over, and now on to the easy portion.

The Louisiana State High School Wrestling championship field is now set and competitors, fans, and coaches will descend upon the Pontchartrain Center this Friday and Saturday for what promises to be another standing-room only event.

Close to 500 wrestlers will battle in 14 different weight classes in Divisions I-III for the right to call themselves individual champions, and if enough from each school score enough points, a team title would also be within reach.

Face with the daunting task of seeding wrestlers from three different classes in each of the 14 divisional weight classes, a multi-member seeding committee began work just two days ahead of Monday’s meeting. They started at 6:30 p.m., and three hours later, the field was set.

“We took a variety of things into consideration in the seeding process,” Seeding Committee member and Fontainebleau coach Rick Zimmer said. “It was a combination of overall record, head-to-head meetings, and wins in a division.”

Along the way in tournament action, there are always upsets in different divisions, but, for the most part, the seedings have panned out. And, if the field stays close to being projected, the All-New Orleans area could possible have team champions in Division I and Division II with many individual titles spread out among all three divisions.

In Division I, Brother Martin leads the way with six top seeds of the 14 weight classes, including Mason Mauro (106), Paul Klein (120), Austin Meyn (126), Daniel Albrecht (170), Kyle Delaune (182), and Ross Brister (285). Four more area wrestlers garnered a top seed, such as Jesuit’s Mitch Capella (113) and Manny Armour (195), St. Paul’s Connor Campo (132), and Tyler Frame of Rummel (145).

Holy Cross will compete for the last time in Division II since they will move up to Division I. The Tigers would love nothing more than to go out on a high note, and their hopes will be riding on top seeds Dylan Soileau (113) and Alex Nicosia (120).

Helen Cox’s Jorge Sanchez is the top seed in the 132-pound class while Shaw’s Kody Woodson had a strong finish in the regular season, grabbing the second seed in the 170-pound class while teammate Blake Faust is third in the 182-pound class.

John Curtis boasts a pair of top seeds in Division III, including Prentis Spurlock (106) and Baron Clofer (170), potentially throwing a wrench into defending team champion Brusly. Alex Martin of De La Salle is the man to beat in the 152-pound class.
