The top-ranked Brother Martin Crusaders continued to impose their will on opponents in the form of a 58-9 home victory against All-New Orleans area rival and fourth-ranked Rummel.

Brother Martin won 12 of 14 weight classes, six coming from pins.

In the 106-pound class, Brother Martin's Mason Mauro held on to the top spot in the weight class with a 10-6 decision over Devyn Braud.

In the final match of the evening, Brother Martin’s Daniel Albrecht, the top-ranked wrestler in the 170-pound class once again relied on conditioning as he outlasted Michael Darwin in overtime. The match had to be stopped multiple times due to injury timeouts, but neither seemed willing to give ground or concede to the other.

“Some of what made him so difficult to finish was his length, and getting tangled up,” Albrecht said. “It made finishing takedowns a little frustrating. I had to wrestle the whole match and not stop at all. He is definitely the most physical wrestler I’ve faced all year, and he doesn’t give anything to me.

”Starting off in the 182-pound class with top-ranked Kyle Delaune of Brother Martin, the momentum was quickly established with three pins in the first four matches. Delaune took 1:09 to pin Aaron Maddox while Yehia Riles scored a major decision (14-3) over the Raiders’ Ryan Hanley in the 195-pound class.

“Conditioning played a big part for me in my match,” Riles said. “This past week, I also worked a lot on technique. My strategy all season long has been takedowns and everything just came together for me.”

Taylor Gambill maintained the second place ranking in the 113-pound class for Brother Martin with a major decision (19-4) over Damien Tornabone while top-ranked Paul Klien, competing in the 120-pound class for the Crusaders, defeated third-ranked Tyler Mire.

Rummel’s Rick Lacava, ranked second in the 132-pound class, had a battle to the finish, before slipping past fourth-ranked Mason Williams, 9-8.

“I didn’t realize how strong he was,” Lacava said about Williams. “He was the strongest person I’ve ever wrestled, and I wasn’t ready for that in the beginning. I had to adjust in the middle of the match and try to beat him with my quickness rather outmuscle him.”

The competitive nature of all of the weight classes came as no surprise to Brother Martin Coach Robbie Dauterive.

“Of course it’s going to be intense, because it is a district match,” Dauterive said. “Daniel’s match was one of the many good ones. That’s our second match of the year against their guy, and I fully expect that we will see him in the state semifinals, or finals.”
