Leaving a legacy often hinges on how a team
performs in the postseason and validates a record-setting regular
season. With a program rich in tradition, the 2012-13 edition of the Brother Martin wrestlers could be putting themselves in that conversation as little more than a month remains before the state tournament. Although the mountain to climb is still going uphill, they scored an impressive victory this past weekend, winning the Lone Star Duals in Grand Prairie, Texas, and in the process, took down some highly ranked teams from Texas and Colorado. In the championship match, Brother Martin defeated Windsor (Colorado) in an exciting 29-28 finish that came down to senior Daniel Albrecht in the 170-pound class, who battled Joe Keller in a winner-take-all bout. With five seconds left in regulation, Albrecht scored a reversal and then, in double overtime, he repeated the feat once more to win the match 8-7. Not only did the win give Brother Martin the victory in the dual match final, it also brought to an end Windsor’s 53-dual match win streak and dashed hopes of passing the Texas record of 59, set in the 1970’s by Fort Morgan. “This was the biggest win I’ve ever had in my coaching career,” Brother Martin wrestling coach Robbie Dauterive said. “Going into the tournament, I wondered just how hard our guys could go. So far, this team has met the lofty expectations we’ve set, and they continue to get better.” |
Every match counted, and in the 285-pound class, Ross Brister had the biggest
incline to overcome, against Robert Bishop-Cotner, who stood six-foot-eight,
weighing in at 285 pounds. Brister, who tipped the scales at 222 pound, and
measuring in at around six feet, wasted no time in getting the edge, shooting in
three times to left Bishop-Cotner’s leg and finish. Brister earned the victory
with a 6-3 decision.
“He was by far the biggest wrestler I’d ever seen,”
Dauterive said. “His hand covered the back of Ross’ head. It just shows what a
tremendous effort it took to win.”
Among the many other stellar efforts
turned in was Austin Meyn’s pin of Matteo Ambriz in the 126-pound class in 3:37,
having turned him three times.
Where this year’s team will take its place
in history is yet to be determined. According to Dauterive, the 2000
championship team placed wrestlers in the finals in 12 of 14 weight classes.
LOUISIANA CLASSICS A GOOD INDICATOR OF FUTURE STATE CHAMPS:
Standouts at the Louisiana Classics Tournament typically perform quite well in
the state championships. Below are last year’s Louisiana Classics weight class
