AREA WRESTLING REPORT FOR THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 29

A pair of perennial Division I powers got together for a dual meet on the northshore Wednesday night.  Rummel prevailed in a spirited dual meet 41-36 over St. Paul's in Covington.

The Raiders got pins by Devyn Breaud (113), defending state champion Matt Calcote (132), Tyler Frame (145) and Michael Darwin (170). The Wolves got pins from Connor Campo (138), Tanner LeBlanc (160), John Brands (182) and Zach Mangrum (285).

Both schools are missing key wrestlers. Rummel has likely starters in Aaron Maddox, Ryan Hanley, Tyler Fontana, Austin O' Donnell are still active with the Raiders' football team, which is playing Mandeville in the 5A semifinals Friday night. St. Paul's was without a pair of stars as well, according to head coach Craig Ketelsen.

"We are missing David Englehardt and team captain Jordan Peterson," said Ketelsen. "We expect to get them back next week. Both have concussions. Overall, it was a tight dual meet. Rummel has some talented wrestlers. It could have gone either way. Connor Campo was excellent. He's a very talented wrestler. Even though he wrestled at 138 pounds and we project him at a lower class, he did well. Tanner LeBlanc, a junior, is wrestling extremely well at 160 pounds."

Rummel coach Rod Cusachs was pleased with his team's effort.

"We wrestled well and won some matches in the third period," said Cusachs. "We work hard on finishing the match. I was really impressed with Damien Tornabene. He moved up a class to 126 and he got a good win for us. We bumped Calcote up to 132 because Rick LaCava was out sick. Breaud moved up a class and did a good job as well."

Rummel and St. Paul's will participate in the George Trygg Invitational Saturday at Grace King. The Wolves wrestle at Catholic High in a dual meet next Tuesday in another showdown while the Raiders will move on to host the Sam Sara Invitational December 7-8.
