Wrestling: Brother Martin cruises to win in Culotta

CRUSADERS WIN IN HALF THE WEIGHT CLASSES

The outcome was never in doubt.

Host Brother Martin successfully defended its title in the 13th annual Trey Culotta Invitational, dominating 11 competitors en route to a very impressive championship. It was the fourth straight Culotta Invitational title for Brother Martin.

The Crusaders won seven of the 14 weight classes, amassing 909 total points, a tournament record, to easily outdistance second-place Catholic High of Baton Rouge. The Bears had 674 points while Vestavia Hills (Alabama) was third with 657 points. Shawnee, Oklahoma finished fourth with 655 points and Jesuit was fifth with 618 points.

The Crusaders were led by heavyweight Ross Brister, who was named as recipient of the Trey Culotta Memorial award, winning at 285 pounds.

Other Brother Martin wrestlers claiming titles were Mason Mauro (106), Taylor Gambrill (113), defending state champion Paul Klein (120), Austin Meyn (126), Daniel Albrecht (170) and Kyle Delaune (182). Josh Tapia of Brother Martin was second at 220 pounds.

Brother Martin had top five finishes in all 14 weight classes. Vestavia Hills placed eight wrestlers in the top five.

St. Paul's which finished sixth in the team competition, had a pair of champions, including defending state champion Connor Campo (132) and David Englehardt (145). Catholic had a pair of winners, including James Claitor (138) and Brandon Luckett (160). Luckett was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler in the tournament.

Daylan Stuteville of Shawnee was victorious at 152 pounds, Manny Armour of Jesuit won at 195 pounds and Dalton Campbell of Vestavia Hills was victorious at 220 pounds.

Brother Martin head coach Robbie Dauterive was pleased with his team's performance.

"We wrestled very hard against good competition," said Dauterive. "This will prepare us well for the state tournament in February. I believe we can improve and are better than this and we will continue to work to maximize our potential."

Brother Martin will compete in the Deep South Bayou Duals next weekend at the Exerfit Center in Baton Rouge. Other top teams participating include defending Division III state champion Brusly, Jesuit, Rummel, St. Paul's, and defending Division II state champion Teurlings Catholic.
