PATRIOTS SHINE VERSUS STRONG FIELD
Having won six state championships in the 2011-2012 calendar school year, John Curtis came close in a couple of other sports, including wrestling.
Curtis appears poised to become a major factor once again in the 2013 Louisiana State Wrestling Championships February 15-16 at the Pontchartrain Center in Kenner.
John Curtis captured the title at the eight-team Jefferson Parish Tournament held over the weekend at Thomas Jefferson High School with 170 points, John Ehret was second with 144 points while King was third with 129 points. Thomas Jefferson finished fourth and East Jefferson was fifth.
Last year at the state tournament, the Patriots finished second in the state in Division III in 2012 while Thomas Jefferson finished third and King was 10th.
Individual champions for the Patriots included Bryce Cortez (126), Baron Clofer (182), Mason Pembo (220) and Spencer Lemoine (285).
Champions for Ehret included Jack Fontenot (145), Derron Harris (152), Blaze d' Aquin (170) and Andrew Blanchard (195).
Top finishers for King included Angello Medina-Perez (120) and Brandon Briones (160).
Thomas Jefferson had a pair of champions in Logan Griffin (106) and Brent Matherne (138).
Jorge Sanchez, Jr. (132) was a winner for Helen Cox.
