BROTHER MARTIN, HOLY CROSS, BRUSLY FAVORITES
The seedings for the Louisiana High School State Wrestling Championships this weekend, February 15-16 at the Pontchartrain Center in Kenner, were announced at a meeting at the LHSAA offices Monday night. You can follow a live blog of the entire tournament here at sportsnola.com
Defending Division I state champion Brother Martin is in a dominant position in Division I, with a high of six top-seeds, including Mason Mauro (106), defending state champion Paul Klein (120), Austin Meyn (126), Daniel Albrecht (170), Kyle Delaune (182) and Ross Brister (285). Catholic of Baton Rouge is the primary challenger to Brother Martin. The Bears have three top seeds, including James Claitor (138), defending state champion Brandon Luckett (160) and Myles Nash (220). The Crusaders are seeking their 14th state championship.
Seeking a 24th state championship, Jesuit has a pair of top-seeds in Mitch Capella (113) and Manny Armour (195). St. Paul's has a top-seed in defending state champion Connor Campo (132) while 2011 state champ Rummel has a top-seed in Tyler Frame (145). The other top-seed is defending state champion Tyrek Malveaux of Comeaux (152).
Perhaps the most interesting matchup could come at 126 pounds, where top-seed Austin Meyn of Brother Martin may face second-seed and defending state champion Matt Calcote of Rummel in the final. Meyn won both matchups this season but Calcote is still very good.
In Division II, Holy Cross is the slight favorite to capture a 27th state title.
The Tigers of Eric DeSormeaux have three top seeds, including Dylan Soileau (113), defending state champion Alex Nicosia (120) and George Benoit (138).
Defending state champion Teurlings Catholic will provide a very stiff challenge, led by three top-seeds in defending state champion Brock Bonin (106), Travis Thibodaux (152) and defending state champion Nick Schneider (182).
St. Louis Catholic has a pair of top seeds in defending state champion Louis Stutes of (160) and Conway Lebleu (170) while Northside has a pair of top-seeds as well in defending state champ Orlando Calhoun, Jr. (195) and Daniel Kincade (220).
Live Oak is a solid squad as well with top-seed and defending state champion Cody Hill (126).
Other top seeds include Jorge Sanchez, Jr. of Helen Cox (132), Andre' Dean of Benton (145), and Reginal Markray of Huntington (285).
A matchup to possibly watch would come in the final at 160 pounds, where defending state champion Louis Stutes of St. Louis Catholic and second-seed Kody Woodson of Shaw could collide.
In Division III, defending state champion Brusly is the favorite once again, led by top-seeds Wyatt LeJeune (120) and defending state champion Trevor Schermer (132).
John Curtis is a prime challenger, led by top-seeds Prentice Spurlock (106), Baron Clofer (170) and Spencer Lemoine (285).
Rayne is a threat, led by top-seeds Austin Bohne (160), defending state champion Billy Marcantel (195), and defending state champion Brennan McKnight (220).
Basile has a top seed in defending state champion Raymond Bushnell (113).
Other top-seeds include Austin Scalisi of North Vermilion (126), Brent Matherne of Thomas Jefferson (138), defending state champion Grant Godso of Redemptorist (145), defending state champ Alex Martin of De La Salle (152) and Jalen Olivier of Bossier (182).
The marquee matchup is expected in the final at 113 pounds where a pair of defending state champions should meet in the final with top-seed Raymond Bushnell of Basile opposing Baret Sanchez of Brusly. Another good one could come at 138 pounds where top-seed Brent Matherne of Thomas Jefferson would face second-seed and defending state champion Joshua Wicke of Grand Lake in the final.
