ACTION CONTINUES FRIDAY IN KENNER

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Whatever version of the familiar axiom you choose to apply works for the 2013 Louisiana State Wrestling Championships at the Pontchartrain Center thus far.

Heading into Friday evening's quarterfinal round, defending state champions Teurlings Catholic and Brusly lead their respective divisions in solid fashion while Catholic High of Baton Rouge holds a slim one point lead over defending Division I champion Brother Martin.

Despite trailing by a point, the Crusaders were simply flawless, advancing all 14 of their wrestlers into the quarterfinals, including top-seeds Mason Mauro (106), Paul Klein (120), Austin Meyn (126), Daniel Albrecht (170), Kyle Delaune (182) and Ross Brister (285).

Crusaders head coach Robby Dauterive was pleased but still feels his team can improve.

"We had four technical falls in the first round which cost a few points," said Dauterive. "We wanted pins. Getting all 14 through to the round of eight was the goal and we accomplished it. We have to continue to perform well. The goal is to get all 14 through to the semifinals. We are seeded to get 13 through but I believe we can get all 14 through if we wrestle to our ability tonight. That's what we are hoping for."

2010 state champion Catholic advanced 13 of its 14 wrestlers to the round of eight, including top-seeds James Claitor (138), Brandon Luckett (160) and Myles Nash (220).  2009 state champion Jesuit is third and the Blue Jays have 12 of 14 wrestlers in the round of eight, led by top-seeds Mitch Capella (113) and Manny Armour (195).  2011 state champion Rummel is fourth with 11 of its 14 wrestlers advancing, including defending state champion Matt Calcote (126) and top-seeded Tyler Frame (145).  Comeaux advanced seven wrestlers into the quarterfinals, including top-seed Tyrek Malveaux (152) and Jacob Dale (120).  St. Paul's is seventh and the Wolves advanced 10 wrestlers into the quarterfinals, led by top-seed Connor Campo (132) and defending state champion David Englehardt (138).

In Division II, Teurlings Catholic leads by one point over Holy Cross. The Rebels advanced 12 of 14 wrestlers into the quarterfinals, led by defending state champion and top-seed Brock Berlin (106), Travis Thibodaux (152) and defending state champion Nick Schneider (182).

Holy Cross has 12 wrestlers into the quarterfinals but lost one huge component when top-seed Dylan Soileau was scratched after not weighing in Thursday night due to illness, costing the Tigers a huge swath of points. Still alive in the round of eight for Holy Cross are top-seed and defending state champion Alex Nicosia (120) and George Benoit (138). The Tigers are third overall.

Tigers head coach Eric DeSormeaux was very pleased with the way his team competed in the first session.  "We are looking forward to the quarterfinal round," DeSormeaux. We have three head-to-head matchups with Teurlings in the quarterfinals and those will be huge. I am very pleased with our 145-pounder David Olivier. He is unseeded and he beat the fifth seed Keller from Teurlings and that was a huge result. As for Dylan, he is devastated and we feel for him. We can still overcome it to win it."

Live Oak is second overall with 10 wrestlers alive into the quarterfinals, including defending state champion and top-seed Cody Hill (126). St. Michael is third overall and Northside is fifth.

In Division III, in search of a third consecutive state championship, Brusly is in first place in solid fashion by 12 points with 12 of its 14 wrestlers alive into the round of eight, including top-seeded Wyatt LeJeune (120) and Trevor Schermer (132).

North Vermilion is second with nine wrestlers into the round of eight, including top-seed Austin Scalisi (126).

John Curtis, who finished second in 2012, is currently third overall. The Patriots have nine wrestlers into the quarterfinals, including Prentice Spurlock (106), Baron Clofer (170) and Spencer Lemoine (285).

Evangel is fourth with nine grapplers into the quarters while Bossier is fifth with nine wrestlers alive, led by top-seed Jalen Oliver (182).
