CRUSADERS MAINTAIN SUPREMACY

It was supposed to be a test for defending state champion Brother Martin (Division 1). While 2011 state champion Rummel provided a challenge to the Crusaders, it was really no contest.  Brother Martin won 12 of 14 matches en route to a convincing 58-9 dual meet victory over the Raiders at Bob Conlin Gymnasium.

Most impressive was Austin Meyn, who defeated defending state champion Matt Calcote in solid fashion by a 9-4 decision at 126 pounds.

In the best match of the evening, top-ranked Daniel Albrecht of Brother Martin fought off a stiff challenge from Michael Darwin of Rummel in overtime at 170 pounds.

The Crusaders scored six pins, including Patrick Hoppe (145), Devin LeBlanc (152), Jordan Girior (160), Kyle Delaune (182), Josh Tapia (220) and Ross Brister (285).

In another match featuring top-ranked wrestlers, top-ranked Mason Mauro of the Crusaders defeated Devyn Breaud of the Raiders 10-6 at 106 pounds, defending state champion Paul Klein of Brother Martin downed Tyler Mire 9-0 at 120 pounds while Rummel's Rick LaCava edged Mason Williams of the Crusaders 9-7 at 132 pounds. Rummel's lone pin came from Joe Kerry, who scored a fall over Danny Evans at 138 pounds.

Brother Martin head coach Robbie Dauterive was very pleased with his team's performance.  "I thought we wrestled very well tonight," Dauterive said. "Meyn had a big win over a two-time state champion in Calcote and Albrecht won a real battle with Darwin. I know Calcote will be motivated by this result and we will need to wrestle even better if we want to stay in future matches with him."

Brother Martin improved to 18-1 on the season while Rummel dropped to 15-5. Brother Martin travels to face another top contender in Catholic High in a dual meet on Wednesday while both Brother Martin and Rummel head to the prestigious Lone Star Duals at Grand Prairie, Texas next weekend where 24 top teams from Florida, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Missouri and Colorado will compete.
