PANTHERS ARE DIVISION III DYNASTY
Traditional Division III wrestling power Brusly captured the Brusly Invitational Saturday in an event featuring 33 teams.
In an event featuring several individual defending state champions, the Panthers totaled 216.5 points to outdistance second place Rayne, who finished with 154 points and North Vermilion, who scored 147 points. Basile was fourth with 137.5 points and Ocean Springs, Mississippi finished fifth at 109.5 points. John Curtis was sixth with 90.5 points.
Two-time state champion Trevor Schermer led the way for Brusly, winning at 134 pounds while Dillon Prejean was the other winner for the Panthers, capturing the crown at 170 pounds. Other defending state champions claiming first place were Raymond Bushnell of Basile at 115 pounds, Joshual Wicke of Grand Lake at 140 pounds, Grant Godso of Redemptorist at 147 pounds, Billy Marcantel of Rayne at 197 pounds and Brennan McKnight of Rayne at 222 pounds.
Among local winners, Alex Martin of De La Salle won at 154 pounds while Spencer Lemoine of John Curtis was the heavyweight champion at 285 pounds.
Brusly has won eight of the last nine Division III state championships.
