BROTHER MARTIN, RUMMEL, JESUIT SCORE WINS

Three of the last four state champions in Division I rolled to wins on the mat most recently.

Red-hot Brother Martin, the defending champion, rolled over King in a district dual meet 76-0 Wednesday night.  David Drago (113), Austin Schiro (120) and Jordan Wright (145) and Matthew Montalbano (285) scored impressive wins by pin for Robbie Dauterive's Crusaders.

The 2011 state champion Rummel Raiders rolled over Hahnville 69-9 at Hahnville.

The Raiders won 11 of the 13 matches contested by pin. Defending state champion Matt Calcote (126), Michael Darwin (170), Aaron Maddox (182) and Ryan Hanley (195) all scored falls within the first minute of their matches. Leading the way for Hahnville was Jordan Hernandez, who pinned Rummel's Damien Tornabene in the third period at 113 pounds. Rummel coach Rod Cusachs feels his team is rounding into form.

"We have everyone healthy except for Tyler Frame (145), who has a good chance to win a state championship for us," Cusachs said. "Frame has a knee injury but he should be back in a week or so for us. Rick LaCava (132) has been very good for us. His only loss in-state was to defending state champion Connor Campo of St. Paul's. Of course Matt Calcote (126) and Michael Darwin (170) have been standouts all season long for us."

Jesuit, most recently the 2009 state champions, looked outstanding recently at the prestigious Grapevine Duals in Dallas, Texas the weekend of January 4-6, winning the prestigious event in which 20 teams from Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas and Louisiana competed.  Leading the way for Jesuit by going unbeaten in their matches were seniors Mitch Capella (113), Gage Grush (182) and Manny Armour (195), along with junior Efosa Eboigbe (145) and sophomore Ben D' Antonio (120).

All three powers head to the Louisiana Classic in Baton Rouge this weekend, beginning Friday at 2 p.m. at the Exerfit Center. 54 top teams will be competing in a preview of the state championships, to be held February 15-16 at the Pontchartrain Center in Kenner.

Jesuit will then wrestle Brother Martin in a key dual meet next Wednesday, January 23.
