CRUSADERS GRAB DIVISION ONE FAVORITES ROLE

If any team is going to challenge Brother Martin at the Division I Louisiana State Wrestling Championship February 15-16 in Kenner, they are going to have to travel a long way in four weeks.  That was evident in at the Louisiana Classic in Baton Rouge this weekend.

The Crusaders dominated the competition to win the 54-team event at the ExerFit Center Saturday, scoring 306 points to easily outdistance Catholic (216.5) and Jesuit (212.5) for the title. Holy Cross was fourth with 129 points while St. Paul's finished fifth with 127 points.

Brother Martin had four individual champions in the 14 weight classes, including Austin Meyn (128), Daniel Albrecht (172), Kyle Delaune (184) and Ross Brister (285). Dominic Casadaban (140), Devin LeBlanc (154) and Jordan Giroir (162) placed second for the Crusaders while Yehia Riles (197) finished third.

Catholic had a pair of champions in James Claitor (140) and defending state champion Brandon Luckett (162) while Mitch Napoli (112), Brennan Taylor (128) and Myles Nash (222) were second-place finishers.  Matthew Mire (134), Reid Burns (147) and Caleb Sutton (197) finished fourth for the Bears.

Jesuit matched Brother Martin with four individual champions, including Ben D'Antonio (108), Mitch Capella (115), Efosa Eboigbe (147) and Manny Armour (197). Jimmy Brown of Jesuit finished second at 172 pounds. Gage Grush (184) was a third-place finisher while Gaston Eymard (140) finished fourth for the Blue Jays, who debuted a new lineup.

Holy Cross did not have an individual champion though defending state champion Alex Nicosia (122) was second. The Tigers were the top finisher among Division II participants and Holy Cross must rank as the favorite for the state title in that classification.

St. Paul's had an individual champion in defending state title holder Connor Campo (134). Dominic Iovenitti (147) was second and David Englehardt (140) was third and Tanner LeBlanc (154) was fourth. Campo was named the most outstanding wrestler of the tournament.

Comeaux had a pair of winners in Jacob Dale (128) and defending state champion Tyrek Malveaux (154) while Connor Stampley (115) finished third.

Perhaps most disappointing was 2011 Division I state champion Rummel. The Raiders did not have an individual champion and finished seventh with no champions and just one second-place finisher in Rick LaCava (134). Devyn Breaud (108) and defending state champion Matt Calcote (126) came in third.

Northside had an individual champion in Daniel Kincade (222).

Defending state champion Brusly was the top finisher in Division III, coming in 11th with 89.5 points. The Panthers had a third-place finisher in defending state champion Trevor Schermer (134) and a fourth-place finisher in Wyatt LeJeune (122). The Panthers are the favorite to repeat at the state tournament in Division III.

Defending state champion Teurlings Catholic (Division II) came in eighth place with 110.5 points. Brock Bonin (108) finished second for the Rebels while Jimmie McBride (172) finished third.
