DEFENDING STATE CHAMPS ROLL IN MIDCITY

Brother Martin put another stamp on its position as the master of Division I wrestling this season Wednesday night.  The defending state champion Crusaders downed Jesuit 54-21 in a dual meet at Jesuit, capturing the District 9-I title for a second consecutive year, having already beaten district rival Rummel.

Brother Martin won the meet by winning 10 of 14 matches, including pins. Scoring falls for the Crusaders were defending state champion Paul Klein (120), Austin Meyn (126), Dominic Casadaban (138), who was a state runner-up in 2012, Logan Labry (152), Devin LeBlanc (160), Kyle Delaune (170), a state runner-up in 2012, Josh Tapia (220) and Ross Brister (285).

In the best matches of the evening, highly-ranked Mason Mauro of Brother Martin edged Jesuit star Ben D'Antonio 3-2 in a battle of talented sophomores at 106 pounds while Jesuit's Efosa Eboigbe scored an escape in the third period to escape with a 1-0 win over Patrick Hoppe of Brother Martin at 145 pounds. In another notable result, Kyle Delaune pinned Jesuit's Jimmy Brown at 170 pounds 17 seconds into the second period. Delaune won the recent Louisiana Classic at 184 pounds and dropped down in weight Wednesday night to take care of business.

Highly-ranked Mitch Capella, a state runner-up in 2012, pinned Brother Martin's Taylor Gambill at 113 pounds in 1:37 of the first period while Gage Grush of the Blue Jays pinned Yehia Riles of the Crusaders at 3:48 of the second period at 182 pounds and Manny Armour of Jesuit pinned Dominic Carmello of Brother Martin in third period in 4:38.

With the win, Brother Martin improved to 28-1 in dual meets and remained unbeaten in Louisiana. Head coach Robbie Dauterive says the message is clear.

"Tonight we proved that we are the best dual meet team in the state," Dauterive said. "We are well aware that both Jesuit and Catholic will test us at the state tournament and we will continue to work hard to get better. Our seniors were great tonight but sophomore Mason Mauro really stepped up and gave us a big win at 106."

Brother Martin returns to the mat next Wednesday at home in a district dual meet with Chalmette. The Crusaders have a final tune-up for the state championship meet February 15-16 at the Pontchartrain Center in Kenner at the City Championship, set for February 2 at Holy Cross.

Jesuit moves on to compete in the Ken Cole Invitiational at Comeaux High in Lafayette this weekend before traveling to Metairie to face Rummel in a dual meet next Wednesday.
