BLUE JAYS CONTINUE DOMINANCE IN EVENT

On the mats, 13 is lucky for Jesuit.

The Blue Jays captured the prestigious 37th Annual Ken Cole Invitational Wrestling Tournament at Comeaux High School in Lafayette for the 13th time in the 37 year history of the event, finishing 20 points ahead of host Comeaux this past weekend. Division II defending state champion Teurlings Catholic was third with 187 points while defending Division III state champion Brusly fourth at 144 points and Sulphur fifth with 132 points among 49 participating schools.

Individual champions for Jesuit included Ben D'Antonio (106), Will LaFranca (126), and Manny Armour (195). Jesuit had second place finishers in Jackie Robinson (132) and Dom Carmello (220). Guy Patron (160) finished third for the Blue Jays while Zac Creel (285) placed fourth.

Comeaux had the most individual champions with four, including Connor Stampley (113), Jacob Dale (120), Abram Sellers (138) and defending state champion Tyrek Malveaux (152).

Other individual champions included defending state champion Trevor Schermer of Brusly (132), Anthony Taylor of Huntington (145), Louis Stutes of St. Louis Catholic (160), Jack Ingalls of Mandeville (170), Billy Marcantel of Rayne (182), Daniel Kincade of Northside (220) and Spencer Lemoine of John Curtis (285).

Taylor earned Most Outstanding Wrestler honors in the lower weight classes while Marcantel captured the award for higher weight classes.

New Orleans area power programs started participating in the Ken Cole Invitational Wrestling Tournament in Lafayette in 1985. Since then, New Orleans area teams have won 20 of the 29 tournaments staged.

Indeed, area wrestling programs make themselves at home at the always competitive event. Jesuit won the event in 1998, 1990, 1991, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2010 and 2012 while Brother Martin won it in 2001, 2008 and 2011. Rummel won in 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2009. East St. John captured the title in 1985.

Jesuit won despite sending about half of their starters, according to head coach Spencer Harris.  "We experimented again and it worked out," said Harris. "We sent wrestlers to compete in 12 of the 14 weight classes. We went there to get some mat time for some of our young guys. What stood out for me was that some of our newer guys took advantage of opportunities and wrestled well while gaining confidence. I think I figured out my lineup for the state tournament--finally!"  Jesuit has a dual meet at Rummel Wednesday before participating in the City Tournament at Holy Cross this weekend. "We are not sure how we will approach the city event yet but we will decide later this week," Harris said.

The state championships are set for February 15-16 at the Pontchartrain Center in Kenner.
