'KATS 'BEAR DOWN' ON LOCAL RIVALS

Homestanding Bossier repeated as champions Bossier City Wrestling Championship on Wednesday.

Bossier downed Parkway 59-24 in the championship match. Bossier scored eight straight pins in securing the title. The Bearkats downed Airline to get to the championship match. Parkway had defeated Airline as well to reach the title match.

Bossier had not won a city championship in 25 years when they claimed the crown in 2012.

The Baton Rouge City Championship opens Friday at 5:30 at Catholic High with the host Bears rating as the heavy favorite. It will conclude Saturday with 20 teams competing. Catholic has won the last 10 Baton Rouge city titles.

Defending Division III state champion Brusly, winner of nine state titles, is another top team while Division II Live Oak will field a strong team as well. Brusly coach Jimmy Bible likes where his team is heading toward the state tournament.

"The Baton Rouge event gives us one more chance to wrestle against other top programs like Catholic and East Ascension," Bible said. "We know that North Vermilion will be tough at state and we know Curtis has a good team. We must reach our peak level if we want to win another title. The number 10 is special and we want to achieve that goal with another championship."

The New Orleans City Championship is set for Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m. at Holy Cross. The host Tigers, who have won 26 state titles, are among the top teams competing. Brother Martin, the defending Division I state champion, is the top team while 23-time state champion Jesuit and 2011 Division I state champion Rummel will also enter wrestlers in the event, which has drawn competitors from 18 schools.

Holy Cross head coach Eric DeSormeaux is looking forward to the final prep for the state championships February 15-16 at the Pontchartrain Center in Kenner.  "We know who our guys are," DeSormeaux said. "We have our lineup set for state. This will provide one more opportunity for our wrestlers to compete with the best in Division I with quality programs such as Brother Martin, Jesuit and Rummel, among others. We must continue to build and improve with this meet. We are thrilled to host the event and hope it will be well supported."

Other teams competing include Chalmette, Helen Cox, Destrehan, John Ehret, Fisher, Fontainebleau, Hahnville, Holy Rosary, Pearl River, Shaw and South Plaquemines.

In dual meet action, Division II contender John Curtis downed Thomas Jefferson 57-18.

The Patriots won four of the six matches contested while the rest were forfeits.

At 106 pounds, Prentice Spurlock of Curtis edged Logan Griffin of the Jaguars 4-3 in an excellent match. At 113 pounds, Spencer Savoie of Thomas Jefferson pinned James Gagnon of Curtis in just 49 seconds. At 126 pounds, Bryce Cortez of the Patriots pinned Ryan Daigle of Thomas Jefferson at the 5:19 mark. At 138 pounds, Brent Matherne of the Jaguars pinned Nicholas Bloomer of the Patriots in 3:11. At 145 pounds, Devin Pons of Curtis pinned Ryan Vedros of Thomas Jefferson in all of nine seconds, and at 152 pounds, Cody Hamrick of the Patriots pinned Vincent Acosta of Thomas Jefferson in 53 seconds.

Curtis won six other matches by forfeit, Thomas Jefferson won a match by forfeit and the other match was a double forfeit.

Along with North Vermilion, John Curtis may provide the stiffest challenge to heavily favored defending state champion Brusly in Division III. The Patriots finished second while the Jaguars finished third in the state behind Brusly in Division III in 2012. Curtis will travel to Rummel for a dual meet next Wednesday.
