Wrestling: Brother Martin, Catholic win city championships

CRUSADERS, BEARS NOT CHALLENGED

 

Division I powers Brother Martin and Catholic of Baton Rouge tuned up for the state championships in two weeks by winning city championships Saturday.

 

The Crusaders won the New Orleans City Championship at the Holy Cross Student Center in easy fashion with 275.5 points with Jesuit second with 199 points. Holy Cross was third with 114 points, Fontainebleau was fourth with 86 and John Ehret came in fifth with 58 points.

 

Brother Martin won 10 of the 14 individual titles, dominating the competition. Winners included Taylor Gambill (113), Paul Klein (120) Mason Williams (132), Dominic Casadaban (138) Tyler Robertson (145), Patrick Hoppe (160), Kyle Delaune (170), Yehia Riles (195), Josh Tapia (220) and Ross Brister (285).

 

Jesuit had a pair of champions in Nicky Charles (106) and Gage Grush (182). Other winners were Stefon Foster of John Ehret (126) and Alex Martin of De La Salle (152). Martin was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the event.

 

In Baton Rouge, Catholic High led from start to finish, easily winning the Baton Rouge City Championship with 327 points. Defending Division III state champion Brusly was second with 200 points, Live Oak was third with 196, Dutchtown fourth with 186 and East Ascension fifth with 132 points.

 

Catholic claimed eight individual titles, including Mitch Napoli (115), Phillip Nauta (122), James Claitor (140), Kevin Moran (154), Brandon Luckett (162), Matthew Moreau (172), Christian Pittman (184) and Caleb Sutton at (197). Moreau was the Most Outstanding Wrestler in the upper weight classes.

 

East Ascension won a pair of individual titles, including Alex Betteridge at (108) and Conor Karwath (287).

 

Other winners included Live Oak's Cody Hill (128), Brusly's Trevor Schermer (134), Grant Godso of Redemptorist (147) and Christopher Wright of Zachary (222).
