Wrestling takes center stage this weekend as the Pontchartrain Center in Kenner serves as the backdrop for the 2013 Wrestling State Tournament with action beginning today and continuing tomorrow.

Things start at 9 a.m. both days. Today’s action goes through the quarterfinal round. The semifinals begin at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow.

St. Tammany Parish features 65 competitors. The top nine from each weight class are seeded. There are nearly 24 from here that are seeded.

St. Paul’s coach Craig Ketelsen, whose club was fifth last season, is looking forward to the tournament.

“With two returning state champions (Connor Campo and David Englehardt) and three returning place winners (Dominic Iovenitti, Chris Meraux and Jordan Peterson), we’re excited about the weekend,” Ketelsen said. “We have a veteran squad this year.”

The Wolves coach added they get the best of both worlds with the state meet.

“We wrestle guys we’ve seen all year and it’s a big stage for us to showcase our talent,” Ketelsen said.
