Annual Lafayette Invitational Tournament*
January, 1977
Lafayette High School, Lafayette, Louisiana
The initial tournament was held at Lafayette High School as
the Lafayette High Invitational Wrestling Tournament. Each school could
enter an unlimited number of contestants in each weight class; however, only one
could earn team points and that wrestler had to be designated before competition
began. Six schools participated in the one-day tournament won by the South
Cameron Tarpons with 170.5 points. The Tarpons, coached by Clarence Vidrine,
also went on to win the Division II State Championship that year. Tara was
second with 126 points followed by Jeanerette with 123 points. The winner
of the first Outstanding Wrestler award was Bryan Lestrapes (132 lbs.) of
Lafayette High.
