Like in most two-day wrestling tournaments, the 36th Annual Ken Cole Wrestling Invitational held at Comeaux High on Friday was dominated by the high seeds. But while the seeding committee can feel pretty good about the job it did in filling out the bracket for this year's event, there were a few casualties. And to no one's surprise, the big picture had the Jesuit Blue Jays leading in the team standings after day one with 90.5 points, just one spot ahead of host Comeaux High with 83 points. Other local teams faring well on day one were Teurlings Catholic in fifth place with 72 points and the Northside Vikings in 12th place with 62.5 points.

A total of four top four seeds fell Friday, including a pair of No. 2 seeds. The rough spot in Friday's first day, though, was being the No. 6 seed. Of the 14 divisions, eight in the No. 6 slot were defeated. The 113-pound weight division was the only one to have all eight seeds advance, while 126 and 138 only lost the No. 8 seeds. The first No. 2 seed to be eliminated was Hunter Arnett of Redemptorist, who officially gave a medical forfeit to Jalen Olivier of Bossier. At 182 pounds, No. 2-seeded Billy Marcantel of Rayne was upended by Byrd's Aaron Smith on 7-4 decision in the second round. The No. 3 seed to fall was Mason Pembo of John Curtis, who was derailed by Catholic High of Baton Rouge's Christian Pittman on an 8-5 decision in the second round. Hahnville's Gavin Fish beat No. 4 Grant Godso of Redemptorist 10-7.

Several of the lower seeds sent to the losers bracket were done so by local wrestlers. Teurlings Catholic's Drew Courts defeated Brother Martin's Jordan Giroir 5-2 to reach the 152 quarters. At 160, meanwhile, Northside's unseeded Joffrion Gaines earned himself a quarterfinal meeting with No. 3 Louis Stutes of St. Louis this morning thanks to a 3-2 win over Brother Martin's Williams Funes in the first round and then Taylor Morris of Lakeshore in round two, 8-3. Morris had defeated Parkway's No. 5 Micah Garrett 14-9.

The news wasn't as good for NHS at 285, however, where No. 6 Allen Kincade was upset by Bro. Martin's Josh Tapia. High local seeds stood strong. At 106, No. 1 Trey Bonin of Teurlings advanced with two pins, as did Comeaux's No. 1 Jacob Dale at 113 with pins in 35 seconds and 2:44.

At 138, No. 1 Philip Miller of Teurlings delivered pins in 20 and 47 seconds, while Northside's No. 2 Traven Lemelle got a pin in 3:38 and an 18-3 majority decision. At 145, Comeaux's No. 1 Tyrek Malveaux got pins in 1:46 and 1:09. Lafayette High's No. 2 Ian Welch got pins in 1:28 and 2:58 at 160 pounds. Acadiana's Logan Pippin came through with pins in 25 seconds and 2:53 as the No. 1 seed at 182 pounds.

Other local teams standing after one day are: Acadiana, 15th, 56; Rayne, 20th, 46; North Vermilion, 24th, 37; Carencro 25th, 32; Lafayette High, 30th, 25; St. Thomas More, 44th, 8.
