1979 Ken Cole Invitational

In 1979 the tournament field increased from 10 to 14 teams and was changed from a one day to a two day event. Individual awards were also increased from the first three to the first five place winners in each weight class. Winning the team title was the host team, the Lafayette Mighty Lions, with 131 points. The highlight for the team was the championship match at 155 lbs. John Andrus of Lafayette High School defeated the number 1 seed, John Ehret's eventual 1979 Division II State Champion, Augusto Menendez, by the score of 6-3. As a result of that loss, John Ehret not only did not win the tournament, but placed third to Capitol which scored 126.5 to 125.5 for John Ehret. Jeanerette was fourth with 124 points. Six points separated the next four teams with Belaire fifth at 114.5, Baker sixth at 113 and Northside and South Cameron tying with 108.5. Gilbert Joe of Jeanerette repeated as the 145 lb. champion and was also selected as the Outstanding Wrestler. James Boudreaux of South Cameron successfully defended his championship at 126 lbs. and became the tournament's first 3-time winner.
