1981 Ken Cole Invitational

Twenty-five teams competed in the 1981 tournament with the Carencro Golden Bears, coached by Ron Reed and Jimmy Vidrine, edging the Jeanerette Tigers, coached by Glenn Eldridge and Mike Mouton by a final team score of 147.5 to 146.5.Redemptorist was third with 142.5 points. Carencro won the tournament on team depth with only two wrestlers in the finals. Stephen LeMaire placed second at 98 lbs. and Carencro's last wrestler in the finals, David Estilette, won at 105 lbs. to complete the team scoring for Carencro. Jeanerette had four in the finals, all wrestling after Carencro's team scoring was complete. Jeanerette had two champions in Richard Guillotte and the tournament's Oustanding Wrestler, Jerry Lewis (155 lbs.). The highlight of the battle for the team championship was at 185 lbs. in which Mike Prejean, the last Jeanerette wrestler in the finals, was defeated 5-3 by Steve Sifton of the Acadiana Wrecking Rams, preserving Carencro's team championship by one point. The Most Pins-Least Time trophy was won by Lafayette's Carl LeBlanc at 126 lbs. with five pins in 16 minutes, 47 seconds (4:35, 5:20, 1:52, 2:06 & 2:45).
