Annual Lafayette Invitational Tournament*

The 1982 tournament was hosted for the first time by the
Comeaux High School Spartans. The new location also brought about a new
name: The Lafayette Invitational High School Wrestling Tournament. At the
helm of the Spartans that year was Mike Mowad who was the head coach of
Lafayette High in 1977 at the tournament's inception. The Brusly High
Panthers, coached by Phil Bode and Larry Gilbert, dominated the 28-team field to
finish with 187.5 points. Carencro was second with 145 points followed by
Robert E. Lee with 143.5. Brusly was lead by three champions including Tim
Leblanc (126 lbs.) winning his second title. For the fourth year in a row,
the Outstanding Wrestler went to a wrestler from Jeanerette - Richard Guillotte
(119 lbs.). By successfully defending his title of the previous year at
the same weight class, he became a two-time Lafayette Invitational champion.
In addition to winning the Lafayette Invitational in his junior and senior
years, Guillotte was a Division II State Champion in each of his final three
years, being unbeaten against all competition including Division I wrestlers.
The last loss in his career was a a sophomore when he was beaten 3-2 by Dexter
Prejean of Carencro in the consolation semi-finals of the 1980 Lafayette
Invitational at 112 lbs. Guillotte won his next match to place fifth to
start his unbeaten streak.
